The Media Keeps Pushing This Fake News

Donald Trump has picked Andrew Puzder to be his Secretary of Labor. Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants (Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s) and a major critic of Barack Obama’s labor policies.

A series of articles about Puzder’s appointment note that he is a major opponent of minimum wage increases. Actually, Puzder has said he is not opposed to occasional increases, but is opposed to the current call for a $15.00 an hour minimum wage.

The news reports all say Puzder “argues” that a minimum wage increases unemployment. That’s like saying someone argues the earth orbits the sun. There’s really no argument. It is a statement of fact and to suggest otherwise is as fake as claiming Hillary Clinton murders people.

That minimum wage increases create a floor on the supply/demand curve below which wages cannot fall creates artificial unemployment. There are, frankly, some jobs that are not worth the minimum wage and there are some people who would do work below the existing minimum wage. But the majority has decided that a minimum wage is a necessary social good.

Unfortunately, as the left demands an ever higher minimum wage, leftwing economists have traded partisanship for truth and claim there is no correlation between minimum wage hikes and unemployment. But there is, particularly among the young and unskilled.

The left demands that people on the right stop denying “climate change,” but in turn refuse to admit minimum wage increases cause unemployment.

Puzder is right on the minimum wage. There is no argument. There is also no argument that more and more companies are going to turn to machines and robots to replace workers as wages continue climbing. To say otherwise is to push fake news.
