That is the inescapable conclusion from this:
According to the Brookings analysis, the less-than-500 counties that Clinton won nationwide combined to generate 64 percent of America’s economic activity in 2015. The more-than-2,600 counties that Trump won combined to generate 36 percent of the country’s economic activity last year.
Clinton won less than 500 counties, parishes, and boroughs out of a total of 3,142 in the entire nation. Those counties and county-equivalents generate 64% of American economic activity. They are urban centers and they are coastal, rich elites. In other words, the people who the Democrats keep saying are being left behind in the American economy blamed the Democrats for being left behind and voted accordingly.
The Democrats’ response is to label them all fools, racists, and bigots. Sure, the alt-right proves there is some of that. But we are not talking about 2600+ counties of fools, racists, and bigots. We are talking about people who Barack Obama could exclude from his coalition as he sought to fundamentally transform America. Many of them voted for him, but by the time Hillary Clinton came along they had enough of the change.
The fact is that a large number of counties won by Barack Obama were lost by Hillary Clinton. Those counties were not suddenly more racist, but they were certainly financially less secure by 2016. The very policies the Democrats have enacted to combat income inequality have not only made it worse, but transformed into paternalistic one-size-fits all policies Americans have historically rejected.
