They’d never come out and say it. They are not brave enough to do that. But these are the people who think words mean things and they think Donald Trump is ushering in an era of fascism.
In the past week, we have been treated to a meltdown of leftwing pundits who think Nazism, fascism, racism, homophobia, etc. are on the rise in the country because of Trump. Reading leftwing pundits you’d think black people will soon be rounded up and put back on plantations and Jews will be put in incinerators.
I have been deeply displeased with a lot of the behavior that came aggressively from core Trump supporters in the primaries. He seems to make people feel comfortable behaving badly. His rhetoric was incendiary. But that bad behavior and incendiary rhetoric is now being drawn out by the left for the world to see.
The hysteria is getting out of control. According to the left, Trump is staffing up with white nationalists. He’s emboldening racist attacks, etc., etc., etc. This is the group that believes words mean things. This is the group that cautions the right on rhetoric against Barack Obama because of the bad things that could happen.
Now they are letting go of restraint and delving into rhetorical hysteria.
I can only offer two explanations. Either they really are not grounded in reality or they are hoping to so scare people about Trump that someone will engage in violence. I suspect it is the latter and too few of them are willing to admit it. These pundits are actively amping up fear hoping someone will do what they are not brave enough to do.
They do not have the courage of their convictions, but they hope someone does.
Ultimately, it comes down to a single question that can be asked in two different ways: if you really believe Trump is a fascist who is emboldening white nationalism and will begin systematic persecution of Muslims, blacks, gays, and Jews, how can you sit on the sidelines and not take action to stop him? If you really believe that because of Trump you are “going to die from climate change” how can you not take up arms against him? After all, a majority of Americans voted against Trump, yet he will become President.
These leftists either believe it and are too cowardly to stand up or they do not believe it and are irresponsibly inflaming the sensibilities of people. Either way they are playing at a most dangerous game and clearly do not care.
Just over eight years ago the left was openly fantasizing about killing George W. Bush. It was not private, but in the open. Now their rhetoric against Trump is even more incendiary and hysterical.
