The facts could not be clearer that Donald Trump a.k.a. the orange-hued clown a.k.a. the alt-right’s god-king a.k.a. Cheeto Jesus knew all along that Ted Cruz did not plan to endorse him in Cruz’s Wednesday night convention speech. We now know that Cheeto expressly accepted the terms of the non-endorsement when the two met in D.C. a few weeks ago, and that Cruz reiterated it to Cheeto’s brownshirts apparatchiks earlier this week before taking the stage in Cleveland. Cheeto could have easily decided not to invite Cruz over the terms of this non-endorsement, and Cruz would have accepted that decision.
We now know for certain that both the Trump campaign and the RNC expressly approved the precise terms of Cruz’s speech—up to and including his somehow now-controversial directive to “vote your conscience” up and down the ballot this November. And Cruz read exactly the speech that Reince Priebus and Paul Manafort had pre-approved. Again, this is just a fact.
Wow. We've looked at advance remarks sent by RNC at 8:21. Contains exactly what Ted said. He didn't change anything! https://t.co/zvjxPsHNsm
Here is what actually happened. The Trumpstablishment first purported to take the high road by inviting Cruz to speak. Then, in a bit of banana republic chicanery befit for a party that illegitimately ran roughshod over dissenting conservative voices on the convention floor on Monday, Cheeto and the RNC deliberately sabotaged their own fabricated high road. For act one of this charade, Paul Manafort and his other Muscovite-imported goons decided to whip up delegate catcalls amongst the Branch Trumpidian cultists in an attempt to embarrass Cruz, notwithstanding that they knew perfectly well all along that Cruz would not endorse Trump. Act two of the charade unfolded after Cruz exited the stage, and took the form of a concerted Trumpstablishment effort to denigrate Cruz’s courageous, principled, career-defining speech. Zod-kneeling sycophant Newt Gingrich and McDonald’s-fetching lackey Chris Christie absolutely lit into Cruz. The RNC’s own Sean Spicer called him an “a**hole” on CNN:
Again, these people all knew exactly what Cruz was going to say. And they still decided to shamelessly savage one of their own, all in an attempt to provide cover for their beloved Planned Parenthood-praising, 9/11 Trutherism-espousing, anti-constitutional, proudly ignorant fraudster of a nominee. The whole week has frankly just been an unbelievably shameful exercise on the part of Cheeto and his RNC henchman hacks, validating everything that so many of us have written about the deep-seated ills that plague the corrupt party establishment. Good for Ted Cruz for ignoring this whole manufactured farce and doubling down yesterday morning on his convictions, both in terms of his now-iconic “vote your conscience” mantra and in terms of defending the honor of his wife and father against a vulgar carnival barking Vietnam draft-dodger who once claimed his battle to avoid venereal disease amidst his promiscuous lifestyle amounted to his “personal Vietnam.”
Anyhow, in the aftermath of last night’s disturbing acceptance speech, Cheeto—who presumably has more responsibility for party unification than anyone, as the official nominee—has eschewed any attempt at unification and is now only further declaring war on Ted Cruz. POLITICO has a pair of pieces out this morning, covering Cheeto’s Friday morning press conference: the first piece notes that Cheeto is so butthurt over his epically being snubbed on Wednesday night that he would not even accept an endorsement from Cruz, at this point, and the second piece notes that Cheeto has decided to revive the (properly) moribund unfounded rumors about Cruz’s father somehow being involved in the JFK assassination.
“…If he gives it, I will not accept it, just so you understand. I will not accept it,” Trump said. “It won’t matter. Honestly, he should have done it. Because nobody cares. And he would have been in better shape for four years from now. I don’t see him winning anyway, frankly. But if he did, it’s fine.”
It actually gets even worse than that. The Republican presidential nominee then openly speculated about forming his own Super PAC to try to primary Cruz in his 2018 U.S. Senate reelection campaign, purely out of spite.
“Although maybe I’ll set up a super PAC if he decides to run. Are you allowed to set up a super PAC, Mike, if you are the president to fight somebody?” Trump asked his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, at a campaign event in Cleveland.
Just unreal, but also what we might expect from such a petty and vindictive man as Cheeto.
A day after accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president, Donald Trump rehashed a conspiracy theory that claims the man who killed President John F. Kennedy once cavorted with Ted Cruz’s father.
“I don’t know his father. I met him once. I think he’s a lovely guy,” Trump said at a morning-after rally in Cleveland. “All I did is point out the fact that on the cover of the National Enquirer there was a picture of him and crazy Lee Harvey Oswald having breakfast.”
This is the man for whom the Party of Lincoln and Reagan is presently in the tank. The Party that once argued that, for public officials, character and decency matter.
Ted Cruz did the right thing by not sacrificing the integrity of the post-William F. Buckley, Jr./Russell Kirk/Ronald Reagan conservative movement at the false altar of Donald J. Trump. He did the right thing by defending the integrity and sacred honor of his family’s name against a borderline-deranged iconoclast who would deny them both. It is to the everlasting shame of the Republican Party apparatus that, not only can it not plainly see this, but it is now forced to shill for the Cheeto Jesus monster it helped create—a monster who disregards that sacrosanct integrity and honor with much the same cavalier alacrity as he shows in repudiating the very conservative first principles themselves which some of us still hold so dear.
The Resistance will endure as the conservative movement in exile. Cheeto Jesus is our Nebuchadnezzar. Welcome to Babylon. With enough strength and force of will, we will persevere and eventually find our way back to Jerusalem.
