Trump is Angry With Newt Gingrich. Will Allow No Dissent.

For Republicans who think they can co-opt or control Donald Trump, they should use the story of Newt Gingrich as a cautionary tale.

A few weeks ago, press reports were that Gingrich and Trump talk everyday by phone, Gingrich gives the campaign advice regularly, and Trump had ordered the campaign to take Gingrich’s advice. Not any more.

Over the weekend, Newt Gingrich gave a rather forceful, but civil, criticism of Donald Trump for Trump’s criticisms of an Indiana born judge. Trump claims the judge is Mexican.

Well, Trump is striking back at Gingrich now. He is offended that Gingrich would dare criticize him publicly. Trump thinks it is inappropriate.

Republicans should take note of this. Trump will allow no criticism of his actions and words. Anyone who does so will be punished in some way.

Privately, many Republican leaders expect Trump to lose. With this, I suspect they’ll be cheering on his loss as a great big middle finger to Trump’s voters — a constituency the GOP claims it wants, but routinely ignores.
