PayPal Discriminates Against Gender-Normal Community in North Carolina

by Bill Blankschaen Read Profile arrow_right_alt

Before the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, ever passed discriminatory laws against the Gender-Normal Community (those people not confused about their biological gender), PayPal had announced plans to open offices there.

Now that HB2 legislation has restored the legal situation in North Carolina to what had existed when they first announced their plans, PayPal is pulling out.

Why? PayPal’s president and CEO, Dan Schulman, said that North Carolina’s HB2 is a violation of his company’s “deepest values.”

As he explained in a written statement, “This decision [not to open new offices in Charlotte] reflects PayPal’s deepest values and our strong belief that every person has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect. These principles of fairness, inclusion and equality are at the heart of everything we seek to achieve and stand for as a company. And they compel us to take action to oppose discrimination.”

Three things about that little taste of insanity:

  1. HB2 simply restored the laws that existed prior to your announcement to move to Charlotte. If it is a problem now, why wasn’t it a problem then?
  2. You have no problem expanding into other places that clearly care a lot about respect and dignity for human beings—like Cuba!
  3. What about your discriminatory actions against the rest of the population, those of us in the gender-normal community? Where is your compassion for those wanting protection from sexual predators? Where is your sensitivity toward rape victims? And where is your common sense? It seems you are only concerned about discrimination when it fits your agenda.

PayPal is following the path taken by GoFundMe when they caved to the Left and took down support for Memories Pizza in Indiana and the Kleins in Oregon and others.

They are imitating the hypocrisy of Disney and Apple by claiming moral purity while doing business with those they claim to oppose.

Could it be that all of this corporate bluster isn’t primarily about “deepest values,” but making money instead? A few thoughts to that end:

  1. Corporations exist to make money. Period. If they don’t they fold. So whenever they do anything, follow the money.
  2. Corporations know that if they don’t appease the Left, they will face retaliation from the “compassionate bullies.” It’s what bullies do. People of faith and the Gender-Normal Community, not so much. Safest short-term move? Appease the bullies.
  3. Corporations use these issues to bank social capital with the Left and to atone for their “sins” elsewhere, such as with immigration and employment abuses, environmental concerns, and doing business with countries who kill homoesexuals, etc.
  4. Corporations can use these controversies as cover to renege on deals and pull out of states– all the while claiming to have taken the moral high ground against discrimination. Georgia, for example, is not a great state to do business in, thanks to our oppressive tax code. I have no doubt some companies saw the religious freedom fight as an opportunity to squirm out of deals without facing legal consequences. It would be interesting to know what has gone on behind the scenes in North Carolina that might have made Charlotte not as attractive financially for PayPal.

Pr maybe PayPal’s deepest values really do compel them to discriminate against the gender-normal community. In that case, we all should find another option more committed to treating people with dignity and respect.
