The conservative movement is on the brink of extinction if Trump’s ascendancy to the Republican nomination isn’t stopped.
Not only has his so-called rise been caused by discontent with elected officials, it has been caused by the Republican establishment’s refusal to stand on principle. The media is also culpable in creating this Trump monster. Due to all of these factors, Trump is exploiting said discontent among people by acting as a “strongman” against the political system he willingly and actively funded for several decades.
Many good conservatives and regular folks have been swindled by the bloviator billionaire whose flippant actions make him no better than a bizarre Soviet-era Russian market woman conning people into buying stinky fish. Like the market woman, Trump has conned a good portion of Americans (shoppers) into buying his unhinged, non-specific populist talk (stinky fish) that only serves as a detriment to conservatism.
Are we willing to surrender our values for a “strongman” whose crony capitalist ways and amorality are visibly clear?
The most recent example of this involves the troubled publication Breitbart News, which has essentially gone off the rails following Andrew Breitbart’s untimely death. They have essentially dissed their own reporter for the sake of protecting candidate Donald Trump. So much for loyalty.
Last night, fellow young conservatives Ben Shapiro and Michelle Fields resigned from the publication after Trump staffer Corey Lewandowski manhandled Fields and left her bruised. As a result, Fields has been unnecessarily defamed and maligned by the bullies in his campaign. Shapiro came to her defense after the publication threw her to the wolves. Here’s the statement Ben Shapiro issued in wake of this:
“Andrew’s life mission has been betrayed,” Shapiro wrote. “Indeed, Breitbart News, under the chairmanship of Steve Bannon, has put a stake through the heart of Andrew’s legacy. In my opinion, Steve Bannon is a bully, and has sold out Andrew’s mission in order to back another bully, Donald Trump; he has shaped the company into Trump’s personal Pravda, to the extent that he abandoned and undercut his own reporter, Breitbart News’ Michelle Fields, in order to protect Trump’s bully campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who allegedly assaulted Michelle.”
Shapiro and Fields bowing out of Breitbart suggests principles and integrity still flourish in our movement today. Instead of associating with a publication keen on elevating Trump, they have decided to take their talents elsewhere. (Good for them.) If Trump’s campaign isn’t held accountable for inspiring violence, tarnishing conservatism, or quashing dissent, then we are doomed with him and his brutish ways.
It’s sad to see what the late Andrew Breitbart’s beloved website has devolved into: a media mouthpiece for the Trump campaign.
The philosopher Aesop once opined, “He that always gives way to others will end in having no principles of his own. ”
It’s amazing to see people capitulate to the likes of Trump in the name of political expediency and opportunism. For what, exactly? Temporary fame? The allure of riches? Guaranteed notoriety? Whatever the reason, any embrace of Trump should be shunned and dismissed.
Politics is a dirty enterprise in desperate need of reform from people with good intentions. Too many people are getting burned out by politics as more corruption seeps into our efforts. It’s disconcerting.
There are many good people, however, who remain involved in the conservative movement that should give us continual hope. Look to individuals like Ben Shapiro and Michelle Fields standing on principle and integrity by bowing out of Breitbart. It’s a very commendable move from both of them.
What’s the takeaway from all of this? Don’t sell your soul to Trump or other antagonists seeking to tarnish conservatism. For the sake of the republic, don’t lose your soul or your principles either.
