Ben Sasse: Hero

My friend Ben Sasse, who represents Nebraska in the United States Senate, is fast becoming the voice of intellectual conservatives in the United States. He has given ringing defenses of conservatism on television and on the floor of the Senate been brave enough to talk about the Senate itself debasing its institutional integrity.

Now the Senator has taken to Facebook to take a pretty bold stand. He is joining #NeverTrump and will vote third party if Trump is the GOP nominee.

This is a pretty significant first — a sitting Republican Senator who is willing to vote against a potential Republican nominee because principles matter.

Much like President Obama, he displays essentially no understanding of the fact that, in the American system, we have a constitutional system of checks and balances, with three separate but co-equal branches of government. And the task of public officials is to be public “servants.” The law is king, and the people are boss. But have you noticed how Mr. Trump uses the word “Reign” – like he thinks he’s running for King? It’s creepy, actually. Nebraskans are not looking for a king. We yearn instead for the recovery of a Constitutional Republic.

I hope you’ll consider his statement in its entirety. He’s saying what I’m thinking.
