For a Man Sued So Much, Trump Has No Idea How Courts Work

“We have a grown ass man running for President and he thinks judges sign bills.”

At a time the United States Supreme Court is on the line, Donald Trump admitted on the debate stage in Houston last night that he has no idea how the whole judiciary thing works. That is actually surprising given how many times Trump has been sued.

But get a load of this exchange with Ted Cruz:

HEWITT: Can I trust you on religious liberty?

TRUMP: Well, let — let me — let me just say — let me just say this. Look, I watched Ted — and I respected it, but he gets nowhere — stand on the Senate floor for a day or two days, and talk and talk and talk.

I watched the other senators laughing and smiling. And when Ted was totally exhausted, he left the Senate floor, and they went back to work. OK? We have to have somebody that’s going to make deals.

It’s wonderful to stand up for two days and do that. Now, Ted’s been very critical — I have a sister who’s a brilliant…

HEWITT: Mr. Cruz, will you make a deal about religious liberty?

TRUMP: … excuse me. She’s a brilliant judge. He’s been criticizing — he’s been criticizing my sister for signing a certain bill. You know who else signed that bill? Justice Samuel Alito, a very conservative member of the Supreme Court, with my sister, signed that bill.

WTH?

Judges do not sign bills. Legislators do. That’s Constitution 101 and Trump clearly has no idea.

Assuming Trump means his sister authored a judicial opinion, he lied. Sam Alito actually dissented from Trump’s sister’s opinion on the abortion case.

But seriously, we have a grown ass man running for President and he thinks judges sign bills. This is dangerous, dangerous, dangerous at a time we have Scalia’s seat empty and so much hangs on the line. We cannot afford to put Trump in the White House when he lacks basic constitutional understandings about the way government and the judiciary work.
