Rand Paul Ended Where Ben Carson Began

Rand Paul has finally dropped out of the Presidential race. To be honest, I was so busy today I missed it. For reasons that no one can fathom, Carly Fiorina is staying in. But Paul jumped out earlier today before Rick Santorum.

Paul’s campaign had a sad end. In October of last year, I noted that Rand Paul needed to take his campaign out back and shoot it. He never did and it dwindled.

Rand Paul should be a candidate reflecting on serious issues within the Republican Party. Though I do not necessarily agree with him on all of his core issues, Paul has been a critical voice on the scope of national security surveillance of Americans, the role of government in civil rights, and federalism. But he has failed to get traction on any of those issues, has failed to stand out on any debate stage except to look stoned or serve as plaything for Donald Trump, and has failed to raise a competitive amount of money.

Ultimately, it was that money bit that stands out for Rand Paul. He ended where Carson began. The reality of the Carson campaign is that it was really a direct mail operation that ultimately pooped out a Presidential campaign. The Paul campaign was an actual Presidential campaign, but it pooped out a fundraising opportunity. That fundraising just didn’t fuel is Presidential campaign, but I’m sure took care of some consultants.

It really is a shame too. His campaign should have been the campaign that fueled a fusion between conservatives and libertarians. He should have been the non-crazy heir to his father’s political legacy. Instead, Ted Cruz took that from him and Paul never figured out how to get it back.

At least, unlike Santorum and Huckabee, Rand Paul leaves Campaign 2016 with a lot of honor and dignity. He never knelt before Zod. He just couldn’t get a lot of people to march to the beat of his drummer, but it was one hell of a drum beat for a time.
