Mr. Manafort is among at least three Trump campaign advisers whose possible links to Russia are under scrutiny. Two others are Carter Page, a businessman and former foreign policy adviser to the campaign, and Roger Stone, a longtime Republican operative.
The F.B.I. is leading the investigations, aided by the National Security Agency, the C.I.A. and the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit. The investigators have accelerated their efforts in recent weeks but have found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, the officials said. One official said intelligence reports based on some of the wiretapped communications had been provided to the White House.
Yes, there were wiretaps. Were they of Trump Tower? I have no idea. But there were definitely wiretaps.
I continue to think the following happened:
Manafort, Page, Stone, and maybe others were thought to have contacts with the Russians. One or more were discovered based on routine surveillance that regularly happens. This raised suspicions, so the surveillance was expanded to Trump land during the campaign.
But it probably turned out that the communication was about non-Trump business that the individuals already had ongoing with the Russians.
That is why the New York Times, President Obama, and others all have dismissed the claims about Russian interference in the election. There was no there, there. The suspicion was investigated and proven unfounded.
But there remain leftists inside the intelligence community who hate President Trump and they are now using the surveillance as leaks to undermine the legitimacy of the President. They have nothing to show the President or his campaign did anything wrong, but they have the suggestion of impropriety and are dragging it all out.
We know there were wiretaps. We know there has been “no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing.” We know there are people in the intelligence community leaking. We know there are people in government committed to undermining President Trump.
Put it all together and you’ve got no substance to the allegations, but enough allegations to play in the media at undermining the President.
