We Should Have Given BLM What They Wanted at the NYC Pride Parade

There comes a point where conservatives need to simply disengage and let the left work things out for itself. Sometimes you have to stand back and watch the spectacle.

For Sunday’s NYC Pride parade, #BlackLivesMatter had some small demands, nothing too hard. Just “the removal of uniformed police and PRIDE-detailed vehicles from the NYC Pride parade,” “a commitment to transform the culture and events of PRIDE to center … queer and transgender Black communities,” and a few other non-essentials like (apparently) ancestor-worship.

In a post on Medium, NYC’s BLM chapter expressed support for the Toronto chapter, which also boycotted that city’s pride parade. The Toronto chapter was co-founded by a woman named Yusra Khogali, who wrote on Facebook “Black ppl through their dominant genes can literally wipe out the white race if we had the power to.”

Khogali also wrote “we are the first and strongest of all humxns [sic] and our genetics are the foundation of all humxnity.”

BLM NYC organizers Kleaver Cruz and Kei Williams (who respectively identify as an Afro-Dominican queer individual (he/him/his) and a Black queer transmasculine of center individual (they/them/their or Sun)) called for what they termed #SafetyBeyondPolicing.

We can no longer support spaces where a force that can kill us, with impunity, is allowed to patrol a day of celebration. We are here for Pride, but not like this.

(I’m sorry, I can’t make this stuff up, they are much better at imagining these things than I could possibly ever be.)

The NYPD has one of the most expensive budgets in the world standing at $4.8-billion a year. We cannot help but wonder what would society look like if NYC were to divest in predatory policing and invest in the communities where that funding is needed most.

NYC should have given them what they wanted.

Here’s a suggestion to NYC for future events where the cowards at BLM decide to protest or disrupt. Keep the NYPD far away. Let the white and Latino and other LGBT folks who march go ahead and get disrupted by BLM. Give them space to riot.

Let people like Yusra Khogali, who these two seem to venerate, have their day to prove how superior she is without the police there to protect anyone.

If BLM thinks their biggest threat is the NYPD during a NYC Pride parade, then let them find out, in the middle of Ramadan, who really might want to harm a large group of gays and lesbians marching through the streets of New York.

I say next time, give these idiots their “safe space” from the police and let them work out their own problems.
