The Senate Kills the GOP’s Healthcare Plan For Now

By  |  July 26, 2017, 05:50am  |  @ewerickson

Last night, nine Republicans joined all 48 Democrats to kill the GOP’s healthcare plan. It was a wide ranging mixture of liberal, moderate, and conservative Republicans voting with the Democrats. This is just another sign that Mitch McConnell’s strategy is disastrous for Republicans. Even John McCain, who voted to allow debate to go forward, blasted the process for being secretive.

The GOP will not now be able to repeal Obamacare and they will no longer even try, despite Democrats’ hysterical claims to the contrary. What they will do is get rid of the individual mandate and probably the medical device tax, but they will leave the rest of Obamacare in place.

The reality is that despite some blathering from lying hacks, Obamacare will remain the law of the land and not be repealed. McConnell has no real plan and no longer has the trust of his conference to develop a unified plan. Anything the GOP does at this point will be far less than McConnell’s promise of “root and branch” repeal of Obamacare.
