The New MacBook Pro

Turns out the emoji I text to my producer the most often is the middle finger one, followed closely by the pile of poop.

I know this because I have one of the new MacBook Pro computers with the touch bar up top. When I pull up the messages app it shows my most frequently used emojis.

There have been a lot of critical pieces written about the new laptops from Apple, but none of those were from people who had actually used them. The actual reviews are now trickling out and people are pleased. I know I am.

The touch bar is just gravy on an otherwise impressive machine. I got a fully loaded 15″ MBP. My prior laptop was a 13″ MBP that I bought in 2012. I have been live streaming my radio show with it and when I do the livestream, I cannot do anything else on the laptop at all. The machine grinds down and the fan revs up.

Last night, I used the new laptop. I was able to check email, tweet, and run my soundboard all while live streaming to Facebook with Wirecast. That makes a difference.

I do not like the dongles, but I got a great little hub that plugs in and gives me all the ports I need from USB-A to card readers for my camera and drone. It is a small price to pay for the upgrade.

I hate the keyboard. It is louder than the previous one and I do not like the lack of give. I prefer older, mechanical keyboards, but I can live with this and am already up over 150wpm in typing after a day of use. I normally type upwards of 200 wpm and suspect I’ll get back there quickly.

The machine can handle anything I’ve thrown at it. The touch bar has made video editing a breeze and it does not grind down. The screen is tremendous as are the colors. Having gotten into photography and video in the past few months, it really makes a difference and is a great travel machine to go with my 27″ retina iMac.

If you are thinking of upgrading, do it. You don’t need the touch bar, but I can see the future with it and it is going to be useful.
