In case you missed it, Senator Ted Cruz has written a fantastic piece for Politico today entitled “The Right Way to Repeal Obamacare”. In that piece, Cruz takes the liberal media talking point of the Affordable Care Act being “Republicans’ Waterloo” and turns it on its head.
True to his custom, Cruz lays out a simple yet meticulous plan by which Republicans can not only rid our nation of the albatross that is the ACA, but also move forward with positive, conservative legislation. It is a must-read, both informative on the proposal and revealing as to how the Senator’s mind works.
Cruz begins as he frequently does, forming a basic philosophical foundation for building to action. The principles which should guide Republicans in their repeal efforts, according to Cruz, are twofold: Honor the promise of repeal made to voters, and don’t make things worse in the process.
Once that groundwork has been laid, Cruz details a three-step plan for moving forward and five areas of agreement among Republicans that he believes can be used to establish a strong coalition of support for the effort. Those areas of agreement include allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines and expanding Health Savings Accounts, two very popular ideas among conservatives.
Given their statements about Obamacare in recent weeks, it seems very likely that fellow conservative Senators like Ben Sasse, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul can find plenty to agree with in the Cruz plan. The question remains – what about the rest of their colleagues on the right side of the Senate chamber?
