Former Virginia congressman and gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello is under fire after making several disturbing statements about Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr.

Falwell, an attorney by trade, said that he was “proud” of President Trump’s stance against North Korea and his remarks about the Charlottesville tragedy. He is currently the president of the largess Christian university in the world, assuming the position after his father Reverend Jerry Falwell Sr. passed away in 2007.

Perriello was quick to make defamatory remarks.

“The devil has his grip so firmly around that I’m praying for his exorcism. ,” a tweet from Perriello said.

He didn’t finish there.

“White evangelical leaders, your whiteness is the golden calf you choose to worship and idolize, in blasphemy of God’s word,” he tweeted.

The Republican Party of Virginia was quick to condemn Perriello’s remarks, while the Democratic Party has remained silent.

“It is never acceptable to slander and smear a religious group,” a press release from the Republican Party of Virginia said. We demand that Tom Perriello immediately apologize to Jerry Falwell Jr. and Evangelical Christians. In addition, we encourage Governor Terry McAuliffe, Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, Attorney General Mark Herring, and both of Virginia’s US Senators to unequivocally denounce Tom Perriello’s statements and call them what they are: bigotry.”
“If similar words were used by members of any political party against members of any other faith group – such as Catholics or Muslims – such denunciations would have already happened. There is no reason that Democrat leaders should falter now in their moral obligation to defend ALL of Virginia’s religions and religious leaders – regardless of their political affiliation.”

Les Adams, a delegate in Virginia’s 16th House District, also condemned Perriello’s remarks.

“As a graduate of Liberty University and past constituent of the one-term Congressman, I found the recently published comments by Tom Perriello to be outrageous,” Adams said. “Not only do his statements defame Jerry Falwell, they insult Evangelical Christians and many of the Southside Virginians he represented in Washington. While illustrative of the angry far left, this discourse is beneath the dignity of Virginians from any party who should reject such efforts to further divide our country.”

Falwell condemned white supremacists and other racists groups last week.

“The truth as stated by is that violent white supemacists, Nazi, KKK and similar hate groups are pure evil and un-American,” he tweeted.

“The media has tried to paint this as Republican vs Democrat, Black vs White and Jew vs Gentile but it’s just pure evil vs good and that’s what we need to unite behind, stopping evil,” he concluded.
President Trump tweeted out his support of Falwell on Monday, saying, “Jerry Falwell of Liberty University was fantastic on . The Fake News should listen to what he had to say. Thanks Jerry!”
Republican leaders have criticized deserving individuals within their own party repeatedly. Will Democratic leaders follow suit and condemn Perriello’s bigotry against Falwell? Probably not.
