Golf Clap for Trump: Approval Rating Hits 50 Percent. Or Is it 35?

President Trump crowed about his spectacular 50 percent approval rating by the daily Rasmussen Poll.

Wow, a golf clap is in order. From USA Today:

The Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll found that 50% of likely U.S. voters approve of the president, while 50% disapprove. The poll releases its results at 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Matt Drudge joined in the jamboree.

But on this same day, the AP-NORC poll has Trump at just 35 percent.

The new survey, conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, found more than 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president, and nearly half strongly disapprove. The poll was conducted before a shooting spree at a Washington-era baseball field on Wednesday left a congressman wounded and renewed calls for more civil political discourse.

So which is it?

It could be a bit of both. The Rasmussen poll is a three-day moving average, and possibly took into account Trump’s new policy on Cuba. The AP poll took place before the Virginia shooting. But a 15 percent swing is unlikely.

It’s more likely that Trump’s real approval rating is somewhere between the two, which means, for him, it’s not so bad. But compared with presidents who don’t have special counsels investigating them, it’s pretty craptacular.

But it’s Friday, so we’ll give the president a golf clap for making it to the weekend. Hopefully we won’t see a bombshell at 5 p.m. today, as has become almost expected (I think the Washington Post and the New York Times take turns). I’d hate to take back the one attaboy.
