Confident of Victory, Donald Trump Pivots Left

By  |  January 24, 2016, 01:47pm  |  @ewerickson

The Washington Post reports that Trump wants to reach out to evangelicals, but it appears he may actually be pivoting left.

Trump attended church today in Iowa at the First Presbyterian Church in Muscatine, IA. That church is part of the mainline and liberal PCUSA denomination. The denomination supports gay ordination, has moved toward supporting gay marriage, and the lady who preached this morning preached on allowing muslim immigrants into the United States.

Trump, a Presbyterian, visited the First Presbyterian Church, where he sat in the fifth row and clasped his hands in prayer as he listened to the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Pam Saturnia, urge those in attendance to “unite our hearts and minds as we worship God.”

If Trump was trying to reach out to evangelicals instead of pivoting left, it is a rather tone-deaf signal to go to a PCUSA church. The PCUSA is not really an evangelical church, but the mainline Presbyterian denomination that has been in a state of decline for some time, increasingly so of late due to its leftward drift on the issue of gay ordination and gay marriage.

That Trump has advisors thinking this is a good idea either signals they have not yet fully understood evangelicals or Trump is preparing to make his leftward swift. Given his statements in the past forty-eight hours about the differences between Trump the candidate and Trump the President, he may very well think victory is at hand and he can begin the shift to the left.
